The first in a series of books describing distinctive local landscapes with their heritage and legends. In his itinerary, author Iain Brown journeys from dale to dale, exploring the rich natural and human history that has characterised the North Pennines. Richly illustrated throughout the seasons (over 220 colour photographs), here are the many different facets of this beautiful area: towns and villages; castles, churches and abbeys; lakes, rivers and waterfalls; woodlands, moors and fells.
Sections also cover the cultural associations, such as those with Auden, Scott, Turner or Dickens, together with interesting local personalities, for example Morley Egglestone, William Mounsey and Hannah Hauxwell. In addition, there is special coverage of diverse topics with links to key localities, including lead-mining, the legend of King Arthur, the Helm Wind, the old railways and packhorse roads, John Wesley (Methodism), the Teesdale flowers and the mosstroopers (Border Reivers).
The area covered stretches from Brampton, Haltwhistle and Hexham in the north to Appleby and Kirkby Stephen in the south-west, with Wolsingham and Barnard Castle to the east (see Map).
